Tips on Making Movies with your Kids

Daddy Brad talks with film maker, Devid Neff about the educational benefits of teaching kids how to make movies. It's fun and teaches valuable techniques including story writing, organizational planning, lighting, technical filming and editing skills. Episode 838, "Tips on Making Movies With Your Kids," is brought to you by BabyBjorn.

Daddy Brad:  Daddy, daddy, tell me a story. No. You tell me a story, and we'll film it. [music]
Daddy Brad:  Today's episode is brought to you by Baby Bjorn. In the design of all their products, safety comes first at Baby Bjorn. Making movies is, not only, a fun and rewarding activity to do with your kids, it also teaches them some skills. Some creative writing, organization and planning, technical editing skills, it's a great thing to do. We sat down with David Neff, a filmmaker, to ask him about getting your kids involved in moviemaking.
David Neff:  I think, for parents, that is an amazing opportunity for education for your kids, right? It's something that's not covered in the general school system. So, for a mom or a dad to sit down with their kids and show them some of their home movies, that we all have, things like that to get them interested. Then for the mom and dad to go out and do a little bit of research and lookup your local film festival wherever you are, your local film school, your local community college. A lot of times they have classes in the summer specifically for kids. It could be Claymation. The kids actually get to do things and animate it. I just saw that the Austin School of Film, around Halloween, had "Let's Have Your Kids Make a Scary Movie."

Daddy Brad:  We made a movie with our kids. Check it out. [music]
David:  What a cool experience. What a good job skill for when that kid is in college and graduates and just being able to do that. It's definitely a big thing.
Daddy Brad:  Well, thanks a bunch to David Neff from "Lights. Camera. Help." for talking with us. Now, go out there and see a movie with your kids and then make one. I'm Daddy Brad, and that's all for us here at dadlabs.com.
