The Fertility Doctor: Conception, Pregnancy

This week in the Lab Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad sit down with Dr. Kaylen Silverberg of the Texas Fertility Center to discuss the appropriate time to visit a fertility specialist. Dr. Silverberg discusses the steps a fertility clinic takes to ensure a successful pregnancy during conception. The Fertility center will look at causes of infertility in men such as high blood pressure, diabetes and draw blood work if necessary. Fertility doctors may also perform ultrasounds, and x-rays known as hsg to determine if fertility drugs or other steps are needed to create that positive pregnancy test. The Lab ep 520. Brought to you by BabyBjorn.
Ep 520 Fertility Doctor

BRAD You’ve been “trying” for a while now. The Biological clock is ticking. But still no pregnancy.

CLAY Is it time to seek out as fertility specialist?

BRAD Today’s episode is brought to you by the BabyBjorn baby carrier original spirit. You know Daddy Clay, I wonder if just wearing one of these makes you more fertile.

CLAY To get the scoop on when is the right time to seek the help of a fertility specialist, we went to Kalen Silverberg of the Texas Fertility Clinic.

CLAY What is the point at which a couple who are trying and not having any success what’s the point they should consider visiting a fertility clinic.

KALEN SILVERBERG Everything really depends on the women’s age. If a women is under thirty five years of age they should really try on their own for twelve months. And the reason is if you have a proven fertile couple, man or women who have kids with each other in the past. Their chance of pregnancy in any given month is twenty percent. Fifty percent in six months, and about eighty seven, eighty eight percent chance in twelve months. Therefore they really don’t need to see us or any other fertility specialist for a year. Now as the women gets older the chance of pregnancy falls. So there we really advocate six months. If they have been trying for six months and nothings happening they need to come on in.

CLAY What can they expect from their first visit or two to the fertility clinic.

KALEN SILVERBERG What we are trying to do is understand where they are in the fertility journey, what’s happened so far. So the first thing we will do is take a history. We’ll talk to the man and ask him if he has caused any pregnancies before, when was that, how long ago was that? Where there any difficulties in achieving pregnancies? Did you have to get fertility therapy for previous pregnancies? Have you had any medical illnesses like diabetes? It can certainly impact your inability to conceive high blood pressure can impact your inability to conceive, the medicines themselves can cause problems.

CLAY At what point do you decide which path to go down?

KALEN SILVERBERG We like to collect all the information first. So we will do a history, a physical exam, we’ll do an ultrasound. If anything in history says we should we’ll check laboratory, we’ll do blood work, we’ll do x-rays of the uterus and fallopian tubs called an HSG. After we have done all those things we will sit down and go over everything. We’ll say ok look here are the possible reasons of your infertility. Based on the evaluation that’s done its not this, not this, not this, we need to look more closely at this.

BRAD Lots of options for couples out there
now.

CLAY You know I sometimes wish that we had had to try longer. Trying is fun.

BRAD Up to a point.

CLAY Not really.

BRAD We want to thank our sponsors, BabyBjorn. When that blissful day finally does arrive, you want to have the best gear possible. BabyBjorn.

CLAY And we want to hear your fertility stories. Did you ever call on the services of a fertility specialist? What was your experience? Share your thoughts on DadLabs dot com.

BRAD We’ll see you next time, here in the Lab.

Five Things Not to Say During Labor and Delivery
In this DadLabs video Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad discuss the five phrases Dads should never say in the labor and delivery room. These five phrases should be avoided at all cost during the birth of a baby. Starting with number 5, Is that normal? Never show fear in the delivery room, and always stay calm and collected with your pregnant wife. Number 4 is avoiding anything that involves my Mom says. While experiencing childbirth the last thing your wife wants to hear is any advise or anything to do with her mother-in-law. Number 3 is to ask, why is the birth in the metric system? Do the math yourself and keep irrellevant questions out of the birthing center. The number 2 things to avoid is saying "I'm not sure I'm ready for this." It's too late to make that decision, and the most important thing is to be supportive during the child birth process. The final thing, and most important to remember is to avoid saying anything like "toughen up" and/or "suck it up". Baby Delivery whether natural birth or through a cesarean section is a very difficult process. If you have any questions make sure to ask your doula or your midwife, and most of all be supportive through the pregnancy. The Lab Ep 528 brought to you by BabyBjorn.
