Team DadLabs has been training hard for the Austin Live Strong Marathon this Sunday. We've got great sponsors in BabyBjorn, New Balance, Windi helping us support two wonderful charities, Colins Hope and Hand to Hold. Kelli Kelley is the Founder/Executive Director of Hand to Hold. They provide comprehensive navigation resources and support to parents who have had a premature birth or loss of a baby. Alissa Magrum is the Executive Director of Colin's Hope. Their mission raise water safety awareness to prevent drownings. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under age of 5 and the second leading cause in children ages 1-14. Kelli and Alissa will also be running this sunday. Please visit and join our sponsors in supporting their organizations. Alissa offers these tips for race day. Give an appreciation gift to your significant other for being away so much during training. If you have trouble drinking and running, like Daddy Clay, it's ok to stop and take a drink. And definitely have a good poo plan in place and go to the bathroom before the starting gun. It's a long run. Episode 848 - Team DadLabs is brought to you by BabyBjorn, New Balance, and Windi in support of ColinsHope and HandtoHold.
Clay: OK. All right. I thought that was a pretty good warm...
Brad: Your ears, dude.
Clay: Sorry...cool down run. Because the Austin Live Strong marathon is on Sunday.
Brad: Sunday.
Clay: I can't believe it. It's already time to go.
Brad: We're ready.
Clay: I feel pretty good. I'm ready for that whole marathon.
Brad: Guess what?
Clay: What?
Brad: I've got a new sponsor for us.
Clay: Really?
Brad: Yes.
Clay: That's great, Brad. That's fantastic. You've already done such a great job. We've got great sponsors on‑board already.
Brad: BabyBjorn?
Clay: Yeah. BabyBjorn. They're fantastic. They've been with us the whole time. They're the lead sponsor. The more I thought about it, this whole idea that we pitched them about me running the marathon with Owen in a baby carrier.
Brad: That was a little weird.
Clay: Well, it was going to be a little rough on my knees.
Brad: Yeah, he's heavy.
Brad: Slowly. Bjorn?
Clay: Yeah.
Brad: New Balance.
Clay: New Balance. Ky Hurst rocked. We've run in all kinds of weather conditions. It's fantastic stuff.
Brad: You left out...Bjorn. New Balance.
Clay: Tell me, I'm excited. Who's the new sponsor?
Brad: Windi.
Clay: Windi. That sounds good. What's the Windi?
Brad: It's the baby butt burper.
Clay: It's a baby butt burper. Our marathon team is being sponsored by a baby toot extractor?
Brad: Baby butt burper. That's what they call it. It's the baby butt burper. Windi.
Clay: What does this do? Why does someone put a butt burper in?
Brad: You know how like when I'm running a lot and I get gastro hurt.
Clay: Yeah, this is not your problem. You have the opposite problem. I had Katy Perry on 11 and I could still hear you.
Brad: That's why I run alone. But babies, they have a hard time.
Clay: Oh, and what happens when they can't do that?
Brad: Then you stick the little thing in and the baby's butt burps. Then relief.
Clay: Have you lost your mind? We can't be sponsored by a butt burper. We've got to put their logo on our race day shirts.
Brad: Yes! Windi!
Clay: I've got another huge problem.
Brad: What?
Clay: Our charities, Hand to Hold and Colin's Hope, they're not going to want their cool logos next to the logo for a baby butt burper. They do great work in the community. They're not going to like that.
Brad: They are going to love it.
Clay: How do you know?
Brad: Let's just ask them.
Clay: Well, that's a relief.
Brad: Yeah, huge relief. Just like when I'm running, and I've got to let fly with a big old...
Clay: Charitable donation. You'll feel good, too, when you go to our website and make a donation to Team DadLabs today. Just follow this URL and you'll make a contribution to some great charities today. To get you excited about it, let's hear more from the executive directors of these two cool organizations.
Kelli Kelley: Hi, I'm Kelli Kelley. I am Founder and Executive Director of Hand to Hold. We provide comprehensive navigation researches and support to parents who have had a premature birth or loss of a baby. To find out more about Hand to Hold, go to www.handtohold.org.
Alissa Magrum: My name is Alissa Magrum. I'm the Executive Director of Colin's Hope, and we are non‑profit. Our mission is to raise water safety awareness to prevent childhood drowning. We envision a world where children do not drown. Drowning is actually the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of five and the second leading cause for kids ages one to 14. And so, it's a big problem. Our mission is to really help prevent drowning, because it is preventable.
If people want to get more information about Colin's Hope or some simple water safety tips to keep them and their families safe, they can go to our website, which is colinshope.org, or they can like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
Brad: Kelli, so Hand to Hold. You're all are masters at offering support and encouragement. Anything that I can do to help my family get over the big day?
Kelli: Well, you have been away from your family a lot of hours as you're training. So, your wife is having to make sure everything's done at home without you, is that right?
Brad: Yeah.
Kelli: So, maybe think about her, maybe a little gift of appreciation. Maybe you could put something in your bag, your running day bag, and have something there to give her when it's all said and done to show your love and appreciation of her for supporting you.
Brad: Thanks for the support, honey. [music]
Clay: I'm such a newb. It's hopeless. Give me some tips. This is my first marathon. How am I going to make it through it?
Alissa: OK, first of all, work on that because it might be cold on Sunday. You don't want water all over the place. When you pass the water stops‑all the charities have a water stop‑try to control yourself and grab the water. You may want to stop before you drink.
Clay: Any other...
Alissa: Go to the port‑a‑potty before the race or go before you leave home. Long lines, but take care of that.
Clay: I didn't realize you had to have a poo‑poo strategy.
Alissa: You should, because you get all nervous and just take care of that. And eat. Eat well. Start drinking now. Hydrate and eat well this week. Sleep.
Clay: Any suggestions, like burgers or...
Alissa: Well, pasta. But you don't need to do all that crazy carb loading. I, personally, am a peanut butter and jelly fan.
Clay: Excellent. I like peanut butter and jelly.
Alissa: Easy. Simple. There you go.
Clay: All right. Well, I'll see you there, right?
Alissa: Yeah. Oh, I'm running.
Clay: You guys have got a station, too?
Alissa: We have a water stop. Colin's Hope has a water stop. We're actually at mile eight on the course, the sixth water stop. We've got 100 volunteers that will be handing you water.
Clay: Excellent. OK, let me try this.
Alissa: Maybe you cannot get them all wet. Awesome.
