Singing and Drinking with a Supermom
Part 2 of the DadLabs Lounge interview with recording artist and supermom Sara Hickman. Sara tells us all about her artistic kids and her activities as a thespian in both the Vagina and Dick Monologues. Then she plays a children's song, "Iolana" from her album BIG KID, while Daddy Clay dances - a very sexy ass-shaking dance! Like it or not the dirty jokes flow, the guitar strums and this episode is an instant sing along classic. DadLabs Ep. 246 The Lounge.
Sara Hickman: You want to hear my cheer? It’s a beer cheer.
Daddy Clay: Sure let’s hear it.
Sara Hickman: B-E-E-R sitting with you at the bar! Wooo!
Daddy Clay: So your parents were kind of arty and you are kind of arty? So your kids must be engineers right? I mean.
Sara Hickman: No but that’s a good question because there is that theory that if you do one thing your children do the opposite. And I think that is a bunch of hogwash. I think it really comes down to respect. I think it is communication and we don’t do time outs. We don’t do punishment. We don’t do spanking. Those are all things out of our tool box. Our tool box is all about communication. So go ahead.
Daddy Clay: So are they musicians? Are they interested in music?
Sara Hickman: They both sing. I have two girls 11 & 7. They both sing. They both have been on multiple recordings. One of my children has an agent. It sounds so snotty. But it’s because she is interested and we want her to express herself. And if that is part of her expressing herself we support it. They both draw. My oldest daughter wants to do Japanese animation and Mange and she is very involved in that. And she’s learning Japanese. And my youngest daughter wants to be in Cirque du Soleil and is learning o play the piano and you know.
Daddy Clay: One of the things that I have always admired about you is that you are totally a tireless worker in the community. You are always playing benefits. You’re working to raise money. You are committed to causes that are local and causes that are international. So what’s up with the dick monologue? What is-explain to us about the dick monologues.
Sara Hickman: Well you know I had been in the vagina monologues which is relay a powerful thing. And if you haven’t seen it I really suggest you go see it. It is very, very funny. I think people are threatened by the word vagina. But it is really funny. And it is very touching. And so my friends Bike Gillespie who is a great write and you should have her on the show. And we are kind of opposites. She kind of sees life through a dark filter and I see life through this happy filter which makes us very great friends indeed. She called me up and had just gone through a divorce and had gotten involved with this guy and it turned out to be dicky too. So she was just pissy and in a pissy place.
Daddy Clay: Is this going to go bad for me?
Sara Hickman: No, no.
Daddy Clay: Okay I just want to know. Because if this all about guys being dicks and I am going to feel like I am dick and I am part of that whole thing. It’s like-
Sara Hickman: No listen.
Daddy Clay: I mentally feel like you are like telling me about the like the play and how it’s funny and guys are great.
Sara Hickman: I’m going there, I ‘m going there. Wait let me tell you what happened.
Daddy Clay: Okay.
Sara Hickman: So she is going on “Blah, blah, men are awful. I want to do a stage thing about blah.” I emailed her back and I said “Spike I love you but I am not willing to go on and bag on men because not all men are bad. There are some bad women in the world too.” So she wrote back to me “Okay Miss Sunshine of course we won’t be on a about how bad men are.” So the dick monologues are a group of women, it depends on the show but there are different women coming and going. But I have been in all of them except for one. And we tell a monologue from our life of an unpleasant experience with someone of the male persuasion.
Daddy Clay: A lot of guys showing up for that or?
Sara Hickman: We had 5 at the last show. And Spike made them all stand up and we applauded them. And we start the show with the guys-
Daddy Clay: Has your husband been to it?
Sara Hickman: Yeah he came. He liked it a lot.
Daddy Clay: That’s a good dad.
Sara Hickman: It’s very funny. It’s just like the vagina monologues in that it is funny and it’s you know heartbreaking.
Daddy Clay: But the vagina monologues is women talking about their vagina’s.
Sara Hickman: Yeah.
Daddy Clay: Shouldn’t the dick monologue-I mean shouldn’t we? Isn’t this?
Sara Hickman: We all had one. I think there was the-
Daddy Clay: Net worth pretty much the dick monologue. I mean isn’t that our whole gig?
Sara Hickman: It was on HBO in the sex show or something? What? I saw a sex show were all these men were sitting around naked but they were talking about the size of their penises. And they were naked and you could see all these different penises and it was really interesting. I never-
Daddy Clay: That was Brad.
Sara Hickman: I’ve never see so many penises on one show.
Daddy Clay: That wasn’t me.
Sara Hickman: Well the most penises I ever saw really but.
Daddy Clay: Okay so you’ve got other involvements in music. I don’t know how I am going to make this transition without it being bad. I want to talk-
Sara Hickman: Are we going to do a children’s song now?
Daddy Clay: Yeah. First I want to talk about the albums. This is one of your fantastic new albums, this is Mother load. It’s got 20 amazing new songs. Including the one that you just heard, the funny one about sex. Also these terrific kid’s albums. Here is Big Kid this is one of Sara’s albums. And also I want to make sure to mention her website, SaraHickman.com. Where there is all kinds of really amazing stuff. You can learn all about Sara and what she is up to and figure out how you can manage to hear her live.
Sara Hickman: Do you wanna, put on your pajamas and go down to the store with me? Do you wanna put on your pajamas and see what there is to see? Oh we need some cantaloupe. We need some flowers to smell. We need some soy milk to drink. We need some cat food for the cats. Do you wanna saddle up a lama and ride out west with me? Do you wanna saddle up a lama and see what there is to see? Oh see some sunsets. See so canyons. We’ll sleep in the big trees. We’ll sip on the waters oh so cool. Now this is the part of the song where usually there would be a saxophone solo. But we don’t have a saxophone so you know what we are going to do? Clay is going to dance for you. Here we go! Shake dat booty. What? What is the matter with you? Give it up to the camera, not to me!! That oughta get on the internet. Do you wanna go over to Batswanna and make some new friends with me? Do wanna go over to Batswanna and see what there is to see? Oh we’ll play with the children. So fun. We’ll ride on the camel. Two humps. We’ll try some new foods. Yum yum. We’ll send postcards to everyone. Oh see what there is to see. What’s to see? See what there is to see! Good job.
Daddy Clay: How did you do that to me? You also-one thing I want you tell us about before we go is Super Pal Universe. What’s that? Tell me about Super Pal Universe.
Sara Hickman: Oh yes you are the best.
Daddy Clay: Well you know.
Sara Hickman: Is that a guy thing? That I can just pinch you?
Daddy Clay: Yeah that is starting to hurt,
Sara Hickman: Well I have the show that is going on called Super Pal Universe which you can go to the site SuperPalUniverse.com. And we held auditions at Gibson Showroom here in Austin which is a fabulous group of people. And we selected 5 kids and they are a teen band. And I am their crazy manager that gets them into scrapes and out of scrapes. And so the site is leading to a pilot which we are creating for television. And hopefully it will be on PBS. We’re in talks with them.
Daddy Clay: You know that in the 80’s or any guy that is my age drove around with one of these.
Sara Hickman: My husband has his one the wall in the closet.
Daddy Clay: In the car. And we brought it in here as a prop. I had my college roommate come in and he was laughing because it is the same one I had when I was in college. And so you can see here that I have got like Midnight Oil, the Smiths, Yes, REM, a little Van Morrison, Credence, Cowboy Junkie, Blues Traveler, and Beach Boys. And down here in the anchor position yes, Sara Hickman cassette tape.
Sara Hickman: 1990 right there. Oh my God!
Daddy Clay: Look at this baby I have been a fan for awhile. I wish you could get a close up of this hairstyle though.
Sara Hickman: Oh I know.
Daddy Clay: Sara Hickman cassette. I am a genuine like old school.
Sara Hickman: I am so flattered.
Daddy Clay: Awesome. That’s all for us here in the lounge. See you next week. Go slow with that will you because I don’t want to have to like mop you up off the floor back here.
Sara Hickman: I want to get to my 4th beer.
