Pregnancy Ultrasound

Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad discuss the process of a pregnancy ultrasound with Kaylen Silverberg M.D. Whether it be through a vaginal probe or a abdominal ultrasound, the ultrasound images are are the first pictures you will have of your new baby. Going to the obstetrician and gynocologist OBGYN is crucial for a new dad, just make sure you don't freak out about the ultrasound pictures or the ultrasound machine. DadLabs Ep. 516 The Lab brought to you by BabyBjorn.

Ep 516 ultrasound

DADDY BRAD I think my wife is having an alien.

DADDY CLAY First Ultrasound. It happens.

DADDY BRAD You know Daddy Clay, if you took an ultrasound of a Baby Bjorn Baby carrier you’d see thousands of tiny Swedish engineers working to make it the best baby carrier on the planet.

DADDY CLAY It doesn’t really work like that. To find out how Ultrasounds really work, and how they are used during pregnancy, we consulted Dr Kaylen Silverberg at the Texas Fertility Center.

DR KAYLEN SILVERBERG What happens is the probe whether it’s the abdominal probe or vaginal probe, because there are different kinds of probes for different kinds of situations shoots out sound waves. Those sound waves bounce off structures and reflect back into the probe. They create an electrical signal that goes down the wire into the machine and the computer turns that electrical signal into a computer image. It is an unforgettable experience to see your own child and hear their own heart beat. You know guys think about things a little different than women do but its still a moving experience.

DADDY CLAY If the couple doesn’t want to know the sex, is there a way to go through this without finding out.

DR KAYLEN SILVERBERG Sure, first of all you can’t even tell sex until the first nineteen to twenty weeks of gestation. And if you think about it pregnancy is theoretically forty weeks long, from the first day of a women’s period to thirty-eight weeks from ovulation. Before nineteen to twenty weeks your not going to see much of anything any way.

DADDY CLAY Have you gone to the mall and seen some of these stores that will sell you a 4D image. What’s that all about? What do you think of that?

DR KAYLEN SILVERBERG I think it’s a little gimmicky. I think people are trying to commoditize ultrasound like the commoditize everything else. My concern is that some of those people that perform those test may or may not be as qualified as an Obstetrician Gynecologist, high risk OBGYN or a radiologist to be able to interpret things and they may miss something and give the couple a false since of security and that everything seems fine.

DADDY CLAY You know ultrasounds, love ultrasounds, the technology has gotten so sophisticated. But defiantly watching you fluctuate between amazed and horrified.

DADDY BRAD Sometimes they take these pictures and put little captions on it. Some of them are funny like family joules. And others are not funny like the face.

DADDY CLAY I understand the technologist trying to lighten things up and keep it fun. I really appreciate their work, they are great people. But I remember my first ultrasound eleven years ago the technologist asked me if I wanted to know the sex. We said no we want it to be magical. She said ok and started the exam and she said here is the jelly and here’s the wand, here’s the babies skull. And we’re going over this area and oh “did you say you wanted to know the sex?” The screen is right there I can see it. Everybody can see it. “Do you want to see it?” “Well a little late I’m not an expert but I know the gear.” And I’m pretty sure this is a male child. Given what I saw, clear as day on the monitor.

DADDY BRAD I showed my son the ultrasound picture of his little sister and she was freaked out for days that she was going to have a tail.

DADDY CLAY Which can happen if you’re from South Carolina

DADDY CLAY We’re starting a discussion over at Dadlabs dot com called tales from the ultrasound. Join us there for your stories and perspective on ultrasounds.

DADDY BRAD Thanks to our sponsors BabyBjorn. There may not be thousands of tiny Swedish engineers in here, but is sure does seem like it.

DADDY CLAY We’ll see you next time in the lab.
