Ovulation Vacation

If you could choose the date of your baby's birth, would you? Many parents are doing just that by participating in a new trend in early parenting, conception travel. In this episode of The Lab, Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad offer advice on how to plan your own "ovulation vacation" with a few travel tips. We also talk with dad who gives us his reasons for wanting a pregnancy at a specific time of the year. What potassium-rich food does he recommended eating for improved fertility? We'd love to know what other moms and dads think about this topic. Drop a comment or visit us at DadLabs.com and join the conversation. DadLabs Ep. 592 is brought to you by BabyBjorn. DADDY CLAY: Today we look at a new trend in parenting: conception travel.

DADDY BRAD: Some parents are taking the birth planing process to a whole new level. Picking a birthday and planning to get lucky. And we're not talking about Las Vegas. Or maybe we are?

DADDY CLAY: This week in the lab we're taking an Ovulation Vacation.

CHRIS JUSTICE: There were a number of variables involved. Number one my wife did not want to be pregnant during the summertime and as you know Texas is very hot. So number two, we wanted to have the child during Mother's Day Weekend and three, my birthday is on the same sort of weekend.

Well I said, "Honey, biology doesn't work that way." And she said, "Yes it does. There's an app for that." So we downloaded an application and it predicted when everything would have to happen. And therefore we planned to stop the pill three months prior. We booked the vacation on the day so that when we arrived at the hotel the day she was ovulating and then we had the next seven days to discuss it.

If you're going to take an ovulation vacation, number one, do not go to a large mega resort. Make sure that the hotel you're going to be at is intimate. Less than 100 rooms.

There's a secret that emerged from my internet research. All of my research led me back to potassium. And a great source of potassium were bananas so I started on a regimen: six bananas every morning. And we have a baby boy on the way due May 7th, 2010.

DADDY BRAD: Today's episode is brought to you by the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light. You won't need it for the Ovulation vacation, but you will on all the other ones after that. BabyBjorn.

DADDY CLAY: Do couples really need augmentation, in this perhaps the easiest phase of the whole parenting journey? To find out we asked some ovulation vacationers, why hit the road?

DADDY BRAD: If you do decide to take a preggymoon, here are a couple of tips to make sure the bun makes it in the oven.

DADDY CLAY: The first thing you need to do is pick your child's birthday. Some couples will want to plan around a season. They don't want to be pregnant during the summer. You want to bust out your Michael Jackson calendar and count backwards about 38 weeks. Then you need to figure out when your partner is ovulating. For that you'll need one of these. Although it may look like a pregnancy test this is actually an ovulation test, they are readily available, relatively cheap. You want to start testing two or three months before you plan your travel so you know when your partner is ovulating. That's the key thing. You've got to make sure there is an egg in play otherwise your vacation will be horribly conceived.

DADDY BRAD: Remember that when you pick a destination that you'll be telling the story about where junior was conceived for years to come. Reno? Seriously, dad? Direct flights and shorter drives will help keep the stress down. Put away the phone and the laptop and ban office talk.

DADDY CLAY: Being healthy is as important for the man as it is for the woman. Some couples, choose to eat better and avoid smoking, drugs and alcohol. Many take vitamins and start regularly working out with one another. Stay out of the hottub! Hot water will kill off your swimmers by the millions. You got to watch where you dunk your junk.

DADDY CLAY: So, Daddy Brad, ovulation vacation. Did you, would you?

DADDY BRAD: I did not but I certainly would because you know what, any vacation that has the objective of getting lucky I am in.

DADDY CLAY: I can see how some dads would be hesitant because the trying process can be a nice one and they'd want to extend that process rather than compress it to one weekend. But I also see that it's a great thing to honor this moment. That's very cool.

Another thing to keep in mind for young couples. This can be expensive. A weekend away, several hundred dollars. Maybe it's just a road trip... to Reno.

DADDY BRAD: Dude, not Reno. Unless you live in Reno!

DADDY CLAY: Thanks for joining us in this episode. We'll see you next time here in the lab.

DADDY CLAY: Six bananas? You ate a half a dozen bananas?

CHRIS JUSTICE: Six bananas every morning.

DADDY CLAY: Did you smell like bananas? I mean, did your wife have to peel you before sex?
