How Dudes Ditch Work for the Gynecologist

More guys are going to the gynecologist than ever before, and we couldn't be prouder. At DadLabs we hope that expecting fathers go to every ObGyn appointment, but understand that jobs can sometimes get in the way. What's the best approach to take when asking your boss for time off from work so you can accompany mom to the ob gyn? Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad share their thoughts on this pregnancy dilemma. DadLabs ep 473 is brought to you by BabyBjorn.

CLAY Here at DadLabs we’ve long advocated for dads being at every single doctor’s appointment during pregnancy.

BRAD There’s only one problem with this plan, and it’s called...you boss.

CLAY Today’s show is brought to you by BabyBjorn. Shouldn’t your kid roll in the CEO of baby carriers? The BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Synergy.

BRAD Now we understand that asking your boss to miss work to go to your wife’s doctor’s appointments can be tough.

CLAY No we don’t.

BRAD What do you mean, “no we don’t?”

CLAY How do we know? We don’t really have a boss. I mean Daddy Troy, sort of.

BRAD We had bosses before DadLabs.

CLAY I can’t remember that life. Hm. What if I had a boss and I wanted to go to my wife’s doctor’s appointment?

CLAY Hm. What’s the best approach here? Make light. Be funny.

CLAY Hey, boss, hopin’ to go to my gynecologist today.

CLAY So my wife is pregnant. Goin’ to the...no?

CLAY Maybe if it’s better if you go all legal.

CLAY Sir, I am respectfully demanding that I be allowed to visit my wife’s gynecologist. Under the auspices of the Family and Parental Leave Act of 2001...

BRAD You have no rights.

CLAY Yes, but if this was Sweden...

BRAD It’s Cleveland.

CLAY Or Iceland.

BRAD Didn’t Walmart buy Iceland?

CLAY In Iceland I would have...like...three weeks to go to the gynecologist.

CLAY And what if I had one of “those” bosses.

BRAD AT A COMPUTER.

BRAD There will be no marketing team meeting to day because Clay is at his gynecologist. Send. That’s what she said. Hey. Headed out for your “appointment.”

CLAY Yes.

BRAD Okay. Well keep those stirrups warm for me.

CLAY I don’t...okay.

And wouldn’t this all just be so much easier if your boss was a woman?

EXEC Headed out for your appointment?

CLAY Yes.

EXEC Okay. Well keep those stirrups warm for me.

BRAD Daddy Clay, it’s 2009. Most bosses are cool with guys taking a little personal time to be with their pregnant wives at a doctor’s appointment. If they aren’t then they really suck.

CLAY If you have experiences getting excused from work to be at your partner’s appointments, please share at DadLabs dot com. Techniques and excuses welcome.

BRAD And thanks to our sponsor, BabyBjorn. In Sweden they have this all figured out. Baby carriers, too. BabyBjorn. See you next time, in the Lab.

Five Delivery Room Tips for Dads
Daddy Brad and Daddy Clay give five simple tips for dads in the delivery room. Your wife is pregnant and in the birth center and you're ready for labor and delivery. You've been following the pregnancy week by week, and you think you're prepared for childbirth. However, there are some simple things you might forget when waiting on baby delivery. First, you might want to consider bringing change for the snack machine. The labor delivery could take a while and you don't to stray to far from the delivery room. Second you should consider giving your pregnant wife a foot massage. Third get a push present. Push presents are gifts you give to thank your wife for the birthing process and pregnancy. Birthstone jewelry is a great way to celebrate the new addition into your family. Forth create an iPod playlist of your wife's favorite songs. Lastly and most important, don't faint. The crowning can be a dizzying experience. Remember the lessons your learned at Lamaze classes and breathe. Congratulations on the new baby. The Lab ep 524 is brought to you by BabyBjorn.
