Holiday Wine: Thinking Outside of the Box

Happy Thanksgiving from all the dads here at DadLabs. If you have a crowd coming for your holiday feast, box wine may be the best solution for providing a decent glass at an inexpensive price. Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad conduct a wine tasting and sample chardonnay and shiraz wine boxes. And since it's the holidays, they take the time to tackle some important holiday questions such as "Should you fry the Thanksgiving turkey"? DadLabs ep. 426.

Daddy Brad: Welcome back to the lab at dadlabs.com - I’m Daddy Brad.

Daddy Clay: And I’m Daddy Clay.

Daddy Brad: With the holidays on the way, its time to entertain our families, but with the economy in the tank everyone is looking to save a buck or two.

Daddy Clay: That’s why here in the lab we are having a tasting - of box wine. Good news! Ok Daddy Brad, when I ask you about box wines, what is the first thing that pops into your mind?

Daddy Brad: One step away from living at the homeless mission.

Daddy Clay: Inexpensive.

Daddy Brad: Cheap.

Daddy Clay: Is a way of saying it. Yes cheap, but not necessarily cheap - although boxed wines are usually inexpensive at a pretty good deal. I’ve got a visual for you look at this.

Daddy Brad: Lay it on - lay it on me.

Daddy Clay: So the typical box of wine is a 3-liter box - which is equivalent to 4 750ml bottles of wine, or 2 of these big jumbo liter and a half 3-liter box - all the same here. There is a lot of wine here - we are tasting 5 different wines ok? And the price on these babies range is between $16.99 and $19.99, which works out to between $4.25, and $5.00 per 750ml bottles.

First wine up - A 2007 Chardonnay - modern a county from Black Box. First do a note, do or don’t travel?

Daddy Brad: Do absolutely.

Daddy Clay: During Thanksgiving - travel?

Daddy Brad: I don’t want all those people in my house messing my house up.

Daddy Clay: You are crazy, you are absolutely insane. The one thing you don’t want to do during the holidays is travel. Establish a tradition of having things at your house and make them come to you, you’ve got the kids!

Daddy Brad: Do that at Christmas man.

Daddy Clay: Ok the second wine we are up to, are you ready? This is a 2007 Chardonnay California from Wine Cube. Oh I should mention - the Black Box Chardonnay from Costco - got that at Costco $16.99 that’s $4.25 a bottle.

Daddy Brad: I love Costco.

Daddy Clay: Second wine, 2007 Chardonnay from Wine Cube you can get this at Target for $17.99 - that’s the second one in your flight. You know getting most of these wines, you are going to have one or two fruit characteristics - you are not going to taste any of that Oak, almost none of these wines have been fermented in wood - so you are not going to get that Oaky flavor.

Daddy Brad: Plastic?

Daddy Clay: It’s going to be fruity, It’s going to be a little bit dry, you’ve got to get a little you know sometimes a little chemically…

Daddy Brad: Little Ajax.

Daddy Clay: Ok do or don’t.

Daddy Brad: Yeah?

Daddy Clay: Fry the turkey?

Daddy Brad: Yeah do man do! Moist and crispy on the outside and moist on the inside you cant screw it up.

Daddy Clay: If you like your children crispy on the outside and moist on the inside -definitely fry the turkey. Ok third box of wine this is our last Chardonnay this is a $19.99 a box, Angel Juice Chardonnay. It’s from the central coast - it’s not from southern California, and it’s going to equal out to be $5 a box - and that is your third wine in flight.

Daddy Brad: Let me do, $4 a bottle, $5 a bottle, $5 a bottle.

Daddy Clay: $4.25, $4.50 and $5.00.

Daddy Brad: Oh I see, I got you.

Daddy Clay: See to me, that one doesn’t have as much fruit pop - it’s got a little bit kind of a vegetable taste smell on the nose.

Daddy Brad: Vegetable? Like carrot wine?

Daddy Clay: It’s still fine, you know what? Your aunt sally is not going to complain as she is on her fourth glass of this swill, and she is complimenting you on your wife’s taste and pointing to your sister.

Daddy Brad: Among other things.

Daddy Clay: Yeah it is not going to matter to her. Okay so, we have tasted 3 Chardonnay’s so far - which one do you like the best?

Daddy Brad: Probably the Black Box.

Daddy Clay: Ok my pick - the Black Box is very good. My pick is this Wine Cube that comes from Target, this is form Costco roughly the same cost $4.25, $4.50 nobody is going to complain.

Daddy Brad: I love Costco.

Daddy Clay: Ok moving onto the red wines so we got a Cab Shiraz blend again from Wine Cube about $17.99 - at your local Target store. It’s alright it’s got a little virile character, it’s got a little bite you know, it’s not a fine wine.

Daddy Brad: Little sardines.

Daddy Clay: Do or don’t - watch the game?

Daddy Brad: Oh yeah, yeah watch the game.

Daddy Clay: But don’t you risk your wife’s ire, if you sit there taking a nap during thanksgiving - watching the game?

Daddy Brad: It’s the game.

Daddy Clay: You know what I say? Go to the game! If you go to the game it’s like a family activity, and your wife will support you take your father in-law, and you make him pay and you go to the game, as appose to watching the game.

Daddy Brad: If you do that, yeah but leave the kids home with your wife.

Daddy Clay: Because you know the horns are playing on Thanksgiving Day so guess where I will be? Ok onto the next wine. This is a Fish Eye Shiraz - this is going to be $19.99 a box - about $5 per bottle - much more fruit in that one.

Daddy Brad: Yeah and that is better. You know this one is called Fish Eye and this one tastes like Fish.

Daddy Clay: I don’t think it tastes like fish! I’m not sure, but you know some people say I don’t want to have red wine with this, or that I want to have with seafood or turkey - you know what? If you like red wine - you like it with turkey, and so this goes fine with turkey.

If you want to go get a Pinot Noir - you want to get something fancy fine. But if you are looking for wine in a box, you are going to end up with some Cabrinet, Marlow or Shiraz, Shiraz probably the way to go. This is a good one from Fish Eye - so here is fish Eye, right there that is 20 bucks - this might be my favorite. I don’t know which one do you like out of all those 2 reds?

Daddy Brad: Oh definitely this one.

Daddy Clay: Definitely like the Fish Eye. The Angel Juice Chardonnay was probably our least favorite - even though it was the most expensive. I liked the Chardonnay from Wine Cube. Brad liked the Black Box. All these babies are cheap great way to share cheap wine with your family during the holiday seasons - and not break the bank.

Daddy Brad: If you got some wines to share with us, or some tips about how to have a great holiday season with your family and save some money, go to dadlabs.com join the community and let us know.

Daddy Clay: So we will see you there on dadlabs.com. So Daddy Brad do or don’t - drink a whole butt-load of wine and start working on your family issues?
