The birth of a new baby isn't just a life changing experience for parents. For the siblings of a newborn baby brother or baby sister, a new member of the family can be quite an overwhelming experience. So what's the best way to prepare your kids for the new addition? Daddy Brad shares his ideas on how to break the pregnancy news and offers a few tips on how to smooth the road for your expanding family. Suggestions include showing them around the hospital, taking them on an obgyn visit, and projects to welcome the baby. Daddy Brad also recommends a children's book that parents can use. DADDY BRAD; So you are going to have another kid, what’s the best way to break the news to the soon to be siblings. Stick around for this episode of Quality Time and we will find out.
DADDY BRAD: Think back to baby number 1 and recall what a life changing experience that was for you and mom. Now imagine what a huge adjustment another baby is going to be for your child. Think about it, your first-born has been the center of attention their entire lives and now their world is about to be turned upside as this strange new addition moves in and takes all the attention. Preparation is key. Preacher “Looks like your mamma and daddy been doing a little bumpity bumpity, your goanna have a gift know it’s to you to be your brothers keeper, keep em from the evil, keep em from sin, his soul is in your hands The way you break the news to your child or children is important. Tell them in a comfortable place with both you and mom present. And remind them of how special they are and how much you love them. For younger kids link the arrival of the baby with some event they can relate to such as the babies going to be born around valentines day or Halloween. You can even let them tell grandma and grandpa the good news. And remember always refere to the new baby as our baby. There are lots of great books that you can read together that talk about brining a new baby brother or sister into the family. One of my favorites is Baby on the way from the Sears Children’s Library. It’s good because it comes with suggestions for parents about to talk with your kids about the new baby. Kid at a kindergarten desk, loud speaker crackles “Miss Browns class will recess, 4th period, Mr. Williams spelling test is postponed and oh yeah, little willie Jordan your mommas knocked up and will have baby over summer.
DADDY BRAD: Next step is to talk about what it’s going to be like when the new baby comes home, let them know there will be lots of crying and diapers to change, and that babies don’t really move around much the first few months after coming home. Tell them how much help you are going to need and ask them to help you do those things. Practice changing diapers on a doll. Tell them stories about their own births and look at pictures of when they were babies. Books like Joanna Coles “I’m a Big Brother” are good in the prepartion process. Close up shot of Daddy Brad: You know kids your mom’s breasts are the size of watermelons for a reason.
DADDY BRAD: Take the kids on a tour of the hospital where you will give birth and let them see the waiting room where they will come when mommy has the baby. Also let them go to one of the OBGYN visits and here the baby’s heart beat from Doppler, and when they get restless take them out into the waiting room. Older may ask some questions. Tell them only as much info as they really want. Question them, they may not want as much info as you think they do. When my son asked where did babies come from I told and he said Oh I just wondered if was the sunflower seed mommy swallowed. Daddy Brad showing his belly, this is what your momma will look like in a few months but just not quite as hairy.
DADDY BRAD: And finally if you are not already doing so spend some consistent one on one time each week with your kids. Here’s a good activity, get some onesies and some fabric paint and make some cool clothes for young before he even get’s here. And the most important thing, even after the new baby arrives, and your life gets hectic, make sure you keep this one on one QT with each kid cause it’s real important. That’s all for quality time, if you ideas good ideas about to break the news about new brothers and sisters joining the family, go to dadlabs.com and leave us a comment..
