DADDY BRAD: Whether it’s in a boat, off a bridge or on a bank, taking your kids fishing is a whale of a time.

This episode is of Quality Time is brought to you by Baby Bjorn, the finest baby gear available, Baby Bjorn.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a rugged mountain man like Grizzly Adams or if you are a recovering metro sexual, you can take your kids fishing. It is exciting for the kids, provides tremendous opportunities for bonding with the little ones and it is an activity that you can do together for a lifetime. Hell you can go fishing with your kids, kids even when you’re an old shriveled up raisin dude.

Now for all of you expert anglers out there, keep one thing in mind try not to make it to complicated for the little ones, a good day fishing is really more about hanging out with dad, throwing rocks in the water, feeding ducks, playing with the worms and eating snacks than it is about catching fish, so keep it simple.

And for the fellas who don’t know s**t from shinola about fishing, don’t worry it’s easy as pie.

All you need is a pole, a line, a bobber, a hook, a weight, some bait, some snacks and some water with fish in it.

You can find all of the equipment you need at any big box sporting goods store like Academy or Bass Pro Shops. You can also try locally owned bait and tackle shops that are usually located close to marinas on lakes and rivers or second hand sporting goods stores.

To start out, I recommend an old school cane pole like this one, they come pre assembled and cost about 4 bucks. Kids can graduate to the rod and reel once they properly learn to hook a fish. These kids sized closed face rigs run about 15 bucks but they are not usually pre assembled so your going to have to rig it yourself, don’t worry it’s easy.

Next you need some bait. Worms work best, and are the most fun for the kids to play with. You can dig some out of the flowerbed in your back yard or buy a box of them at the bait and tackle shop. Big juicy night crawlers are usually the fish’s favorite. If you are a real sissy and are afraid of putting a worm on a hook, then you shouldn’t be fishing... I’m just kidding you can use corn form a can. But don’t give your kids corn for snacks, get some good snacks.

The last piece to this puzzle is finding your fishing hole. Even if you live in the middle of a city in the middle of a dessert you can find a fishing hole. Check out local natural and man made lakes or rivers that are on the outskirts of many towns, neighborhood duck ponds, hit up a buddy with a boat, it doesn’t matter where you fish just as long as you are hanging with the kids.

You can find everything you need to know about fishing at TakeMeFishing.org. They have local fishing hole finders, multiple how to guides on fishing techniques, as well as state by state permit and licensing information, however in many states bank fishing with cane poles doesn’t require a fishing license.

I’d like to thank our sponsor Baby Bjorn, fabulous baby gear baby gear Baby Bjorn.

Oh, and I almost forgot, teach your kids how to tell a proper fish story to mom.

If you’ve got a great fish story, go on over to DadLabs.com and join the conversation. That’s all for this episode of quality time. Now go put a hook in the water.
