ACL Music Fest Family Music Highlights

At the recent Austin City Limits Music Festival, Daddy Brad braved the rain and mud to bring you highlights of live music from some great children's music artists. Check out our interviews with Disney musician Ralph's World, kids music performers Milkshake, and hip hop rapper Secret Agent 23 Skiddo. Daddy Brad also talks with 10-year old blues guitar player virtuoso Quinn Sullivan. Family music makes for great Quality Time. DadLabs Ep. 567 is brought to you by BabyBjorn.

Daddy Brad: Hey, I'm Daddy Brad from the Austin, Texas 2009 "Where's Waldo?" festival. Look at all these people. Where's Waldo? I'm just kidding. It's Austin City Limits Music Festival. It's a sea of people! Come on with us, we're gonna have some really cool interviews with some really cool family bands. Stick around.

Ralph - Ralph's World: With writing kids songs, your imagination is as broad as the kids imaginations. I think in a way the playground is that much bigger. The song on the new album, "Edward the Tap Dancing Elephant", I dare, you know, Jane's Addiction to do a song called "Edward the Tap Dancing Elephant". They'd get booed out of the place.

Daddy Brad: So you're just kind of writing music for kids to entertain your children?

Milkshake: Yeah, that's how it started. And the neighborhood kids and play dates, you know, like everybody does. And then, you know, we put them up on the web and one of them got picked up and got put on a TV show. And we've really enjoyed it. You'll know your first show if you enjoy it.

Secret Agent 23 Skiddo: When she started getting old enough, you know, to share into it and get to that magical age right around 3 or 4 when she starts letting you into her brain and see what's going on there, I realized that was gonna be a really, really fun thing to explore. So it's just natural to go ahead and put it to a beat. See, hip hop is a great storytelling medium because it has more words in it, like 10 times more words in it than almost any other genre of music. So when it comes to storytelling for kids, plus a beat they can dance to, kid hop, you'll love it.

Daddy Brad: You are an incredible guitar player. How old are you?

Quinn Sullivan: I am 10 years old.

Daddy Brad: And what grade are you in?

Quinn Sullivan: 5th.

Daddy Brad: And when did you start playing the guitar?

Quinn Sullivan: When I was 3.

Daddy Brad: Well so how did you hook up with Quinn in the beginning?

Tom Hambridge: Well, I produce Buddy Guy who's a legendary guitar player. And he kind of discovered Quinn. He said to me, we were making Buddy Guy's last record Skin Deep, he just said, "I really want you to meet this young boy." He was 9 at the time. He said, "I'd love to get him on a song on the record." So, I wrote a song called "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?", a song about who's gonna fill B.B. King and Buddy Guy's shoes when they are no longer here. And here's an example of somebody who's gonna do that.

Daddy Brad: Well, that's all from the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival. Unbelievable family music at the Austin Kiddie Limits stage. Thanks to Tor Heims for hooking us up with all those great bands. Enjoyed the interviews. Get involved with family music with your kids. It's a great thing to do. Go see some music. Also thank you BabyBjorn for sponsoring this show. Take care. We'll see you next time on DadLabs.com.
