A Family That Rocks Together

In this episode of Quality Time, Daddy Brad and his family take on a cool, fun challenge. They're forming a family rock band! First, start off with a list of awesome band names and let the kids choose their favorite band name. Then, let these young musicians create their own costumes using wigs, sunglasses and all sorts of clothes and props. Write a song or two and head to the recording studio to record them. Easy to use software like Apple's GarageBand can help. Design an album cover. Then, you're ready to rock! Close it out with a live concert for the rest of your family. This is a wonderful activity that will teach your kids about music and allow them to be creative while they work on developing their budding rock star skills. Rock and roll! DadLabs ep. 458 is brought to you by BabyBjorn.

DADDY BRAD: Everybody wants to be a rock and roll star and everyone wants to spend quality time with their kids. Here’s an idea. Start a band with your kids.

This episode of quality time is brought to you by Baby Bjorn, some of the coolest baby gear in the world, Baby Bjorn.

The first thing you need to do to start a band is to come up with a cool name.

BOY: Awesome Bat Babies!

GIRL: Awesome Baby Bat Babies!

DADDY BRAD: One of the greatest things about being a rock and roll star is you get to wear whatever you want to wear so pick out a costume. Guys can wear chicks clothes and chicks can wear guy clothes.

BOY: I comb my hair with my gun.

DADDY BRAD: Now it’s time to write your tune. If you play a musical instrument like a guitar you can strum and let you kid play along on the harmonica or kazoo or just beat on pots and pans. Just making noise is what it’s all about. The point is help your kids write a song.

BOY: Write on me, baby, write on me! [sings]

DADDY BRAD: Now that you’ve got a song you have to lay down some tracks in the studio. Once again, if you’re a musical dad or a tech dad you can put it down on garage band or one of those softwares that you musicians use. If you’re like me – tape player, baby!

Now your band needs an album cover. Gather us the band and go take some cool pictures.

What you need is a live show. Take that photo you made and make some posters. Stick them around the house. Invite Grandma and Grandpa, people that don’t have much to do.

[Kids play]

DADDY BRAD: Well that’s all for us this week in Quality Time. We’d like to thank our sponsors, Baby Bjorn. Really cool cool baby gear. If you write a great song with your family band or you make a cool album cover go to DadLabs.com and join the community and share.
