Petunia Pickle Bottom: Cool Diaper Bag for Dads

In the latest installment of Gear Daddy, Daddy Brad meets up with Petunia Pickle Bottom CEO Braden Jones at the ABC Kids Expo to discuss their latest line of baby diaper bags, the Scout Collection. These designer bags are great for both moms and dads. This leather bag can be used to carry baby wipes, diapers, and all sorts of baby accessories and comes with a diaper changing pad. When you outgrow the diaper bag, it makes a great shoulder bag for dad. It can hold a laptop computer, magazines and newspapers, and even beer, as Daddy Brad discovers. DadLabs Ep. 561 is brought to you by BabyBjorn.

DadLabs Ep. 561

DADDY BRAD: Hey I’m Daddy Brad and I’m here at the ABC baby expo in Las Vegas. Everybody knows that Petunia Pickle Bottom makes a coveted diaper bag for moms, but I bet you didn’t know that they make a great bag for dads.

DADDY BRAD: I’m here with Braden Jones CEO of Petunia Pickle Bottom and he is going to tell us about the scout collection. These are awesome bags, tell me a little about them.

BRANDEN JONES: We have two types of scout bags, one if felt one in leather. So the leather one is our answer for the sophisticated bag that doesn’t look like a diaper bag. So this bag is not only a diaper bag but can be used after the baby. It has a great handle outside so if you are just picking it up and its perfect. Usually you can just put the strap over the shoulder and carry it like that. So basically from the outside you have multiple pockets, here is one for magazines or newspaper, anything back there. You have two bottle pockets on either side. And you can take them off if you want. You can also put beer in here. But if they come off they look like a regular bag.

DADDY BRAD: Functionality, show me what’s inside. What’s up with that.

BRANDEN JONES: So opening this up we have multiple things. We have a water resistant pad that you can change diapers on.

DADDY BRAD: Also, you can carry a beer in there. Three beers.

BRANDEN JONES: So we have a few more pockets in here and what it comes with is a removable liner. Right here this comes off and you have an extra liner that comes with it. When you’re done using the diaper liner you have lap top liner. We have a padding for your laptop in the back and we actually have straps to hold in the computer so it wont fall out. It comes with a pouch that can hold clips for the stroller and has a wippy case or a case for your cigars.

DADDY BRAD: And its leather.

BRANDEN JONES: Yes its buffalo. I believe its buffalo. There is a few different animals on this.

DADDY BRAD: Well Branden these are awesome. This is like 700,000sqft of baby stuff and tons of diaper bags and this is my favorite. Well that’s all from here at the ABC Kids Expo I’m Daddy Brad we’ll see you at dadlabs.com

Brad, how would you rate this bag on size and flexibility. The leather ones are so much more expensive than the ones we've been happy with. But we're looking so I'll give it a fair chance.

Is this a bag that you can haul stuff for a toddler (2 diapers, a bottle or sippy, snacks and a first aid kit), 2 toddlers (double the consumables) or would it work for a newborn/infant (five or six diapers, a couple bottles, formula holder, bibs and rags) or, as I am looking for right now, could it handle an infant AND a toddler?

Sure, it looks tough and can become a laptop bag, but how practical is it really? For the price these are going for, I could get this or convert a messenger bag three times. It may just be me, but just because a lot of moms are willing to spend crazy money on a formless Vera Bradley 30 gallon "diaper bag", we dads are usually more rational about our accessories. Just sayin'.

Awesome Bag

It's awesome to finally see GOOD looking diaper bags for Dads. When my son was a baby I gave up looking and ended up using a regular messenger bag instead.

These new dad bags are so much better options than the previous choices of "I feel humiliated with this" Mom bags or "this bag is ugly, but it's all I could find."

I think this particular company really needs to change the branding for their Dad products, though -- as soon as I see something like "Petunia Pickle Bottom" it makes me run for the hills under the assumption that there will be nothing for a Dad in sight.
