How to Make Your Kid a Rocket Scientist
Have fun with your kids while helping them become the rocket scientists you always knew they were...what could be better! Daddy Troy travels to the Maker Faire in Austin Texas to experience, first hand, the awesome power of rocket science and all the physics behind it! We're no scientist but explosions, rocket launchers, and wacky science experiments seem to spell a fun and educational time for any dad and his kid! DadLabs Ep. 433 Gear Daddy.
Daddy Troy: Welcome back to Dad Labs I’m Daddy Troy. We are back at the Makerfaire in Austin, Texas. Today’s subject: Model Rockets. Here I am with James Duffy from the Austin Area Rocketry Group. And they are here at Makerfaire and they’re helping kids make and launch rockets.
James Duffy: Their very own rockets. We are teaching them to be rocket scientists in 30 minutes or less.
Daddy Troy: So James I am a dad I want to do this. I have never done it before. I go to the hobby store, what do I buy?
James Duffy: Well you will buy what is probably called a starter set. It will be a simple package. It will have a rocket kit not unlike this. It will have a few rocket motors. It will have the launch pad you need to launch the rocket and the electrical launch control system. The whole thing shouldn’t cost more than $20 or $30.
Daddy Troy: If a dad really wasn’t sure what to do and was uncomfortable going to a hobby shop or wanted to get involved in a group like yours, are there groups like yours all across the nation?
James Duffy: All across the country there are EEE and national association of rocketry groups. It is very easy to find these organizations. Just go visit the national association of rocketry website at nar.org. Or the EEE website at EEE.org.
Daddy Troy: And so you guys are going to be launching here today right?
James Duffy: Right outside here.
Daddy Troy: Well let’s go check that out.
James Duffy: (unintelligible) you are #4. I want you to go out to the launch pad right there and Mark will help you get set up.
Unknown speaker: Yes there is a rocket on pad 6 going on 5-4-3-2-1.
Daddy Troy: Well that’s all for this week. We’ll see you next time on DadLabs.com.
