Gear Dadddy's Favorite night Light: the Candela

In this episode of Gear Daddy, Daddy Troy takes a look at a few night lights from OXO. Among the lights viewed are the Candela "Tooli", "Roomi", "Zoom", and "Guardian" models. With cool induction recharging and a charmingly odd, but modern design, these nightlights make a kid feel more secure, with style. This lighting makes for great gifts for parents and kids alike. Shot on location at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. Brought to you by Mommy Mixer. DadLabs ep. 418.

DADDY TROY: Welcome back to Gear Daddy. I’m your host Daddy Troy and today I’m with Kelly of Oxo and they’ve invented this really amazing night light. It’s got some high tech features.

KELLY: So what this is is the Candela Tooli. It makes a great nightlight for kids especially for kids who are afraid of the dark. They want to go to bed with something lit but also safe. They charge through magnetic induction.

DADDY TROY: Whoa, so you don’t plug them in?

KELLY: Yes, there’s no exposed metal part, which makes them very safe. You can put it anywhere on the counter, in the bed. It’s not going to cause any danger or problems.

DADDY TROY: There’s no place any wire or cord that plugs into this. There’s no place where you unscrew it. The battery is inside, self-contained.

KELLY: Yes, you simply place it on the charger where it’s going to turn off and once you remove it from the charger it automatically lights up. It’s great if there’s a power outage because you can find it.

DADDY TROY: It lights up. That’s amazing! How long to they last?

KELLY: They stay on for 8 to 10 hours on each charge. They use a nickel cadmium battery. Compared to a cell phone battery that will last you a couple years depending on how often you use it.

DADDY TROY: Do you recommend that you use it all the way down before charging it back up?

KELLY: We do. I think if you let it run all the way down it will stay on longer and might improve the lifespan of the battery.

DADDY TROY: I see you have a little button here where you can turn it on or off. The overall line is called Candela and this little guy/girl/it/alien is called a Tooli? What’s a Tooli?

KELLY: We don’t know. The kids can look at it and decide what it is and make up any creation they want.

DADDY TROY: It also makes it like a toy in addition to a nightlight.

KELLY: We have some great other night light features. This is our Roomie. It’s almost like two nightlights in one. This is the charger and it uses the magnetic induction. When it is unplugged it is white but when you plug it in it has a blue glow. Then you simply just hang this on here. And if they get scared and want to take it off it will light up. You can use both sides. This side will show off more light than this side.

DADDY TROY: That’s really smart. It seems like you’ve thought of everything in terms of design. So there’s the Tooli, the Roomie. What else have you got?

KELLY: We also have the Zoom, which is really great. It resembles a rocket ship. And that is our Guardian. We made the Roomie based off the success of the Guardian. This one is great as a baby shower gift because it is wonderful for people who are breastfeeding. They’re getting up at night and go searching for the light switch. They don’t want to wake up the baby. You simply remove it from the charger and walk around like a little lantern.

DADDY TROY: Kelly, thank you for telling us about the Candela, a really well designed product that’s got style and geek behind it. I really love it. Dad’s you should check it out. We’ll see you next time on Gear Daddy and all week long at DadLabs.com.
