Stairs can be a difficult place for little kids. With Care Rails from KidCo, kids can hold onto a stair rail that is just the right height. They are easy to install for even the hardware-phobic dad. Daddy Troy walks us through how we can save some strain on our backs and make our home a much safer place. DadLabs Ep. 208 Gear Daddy.
Daddy Troy: The real reason guy's backs start to go bad is because they carry their kids up and down the stairs all the time because they are afraid their kids might fall down the stairs. That is one of my big concerns. I live in a two-story house. And I was actually thinking about putting in a whole new stair rail and then I found from KidCo this great device that you can actually hook up to your existing stair rail. And Carol is going to tell us about that.
Carol: Care rail system is a toddler stairway hand rail. And basically it is designed to help children learn to navigate the stairs. The existing adult hand rail is usually too high for them to reach for. When they do reach they are up above their head, they lose their balance and it can cause injuries from falling down the stairs. So what you can do is install care rails directly underneath the existing adult hand rail leaving no marks to the walls. And it offers a lower point of grasp. So the child doesn't have to reach any higher than their shoulder, giving them a nice balance going down the stairs.
Daddy Troy: That's great a sense of independence too.
Carol: It does they can do it all by themselves. It has a smaller diameter grip so it allows them to actually put their hand around the entire hand rail. It has a thumb guide which helps guide them down the stairs. And it actually has a no-slip grip pad on the back. So it helps them from skidding down the stairs as well. Now this is just one of the styles that we have. A lot of the older homes in the United States have the existing hand rail already. But a lot of the newer style houses have those two-story entries with a lot of the banisters and the spindles going down the stairs. So we have another installation kit that actually goes around the spindles so there is no drilling into the spindles, there is no damage to them as well. So there is one for every purpose really.
Daddy Troy: Super and how hard is this one- that one is really easy to install. How hard is this one to install for somebody who is not really hardware inclined?
Carol: Basically just a cordless drill or a screwdriver. And it goes directly into underneath the existing hand rail.
Daddy Troy: And do you mount it to the wall as well? Do you have to get sheetrock screws as everything and worry about that?
Carol: No you don't have to. You can if you want to. But there are some pads against here which will help it bump up against the wall.
Daddy Troy: That's super. Wow you guys thought of everything. I really love this product. It is really cool.
Carol: That's great thank you.
Daddy Troy: Thanks so much.
