TOPIC: What's on Tap?

Tickets for the drawing to buy six bottles of Three Floyds' Dark Lord go on sale today or tomorrow. That's eliminated the line, mostly. A couple years ago, people were reselling the "bottle" on eBay for loads and loads of cash. Those Imperial Stouts are cash cows. I'm not as much a fan as I once was.

Red Hook had a mixed case available at Costco. That's some creamy ale. reminded me just how rare it is for me to have decent beer in the house.

In my defense, we had some Ferrari Carano Chard and a really nice Elizabeth Spencer Pinot Noir with shrimp scampi last night.

Had a bottling party with the folks who are part of the Lenten Brew project. It's a splinter groupd from church treating the brewing and fermentation as a Lenten Discipline. Great fun.

We bottled about 70 bottles of Belgian Pale Ale in 20 minutes.

Then, because three potential drinkers had to leave quickly, three remaining of us HAD to split some beer...

Bell's Expedition Stout, Dark Horse Raspberry Ale, Victory Hop Wallop, Goose Island Pere Jaques, Unibroue Ephemere Ale, Three Floyds Robert The Bruce, Original Sin Cider, Rougue Dead Guy and My Penguin Ate Her Dopplebock and Morello Stout (w/ coffee).

Just a bit.

One of the liquor stores in town, probably the newest, offers members of our homebrewing club a 15% discount on anything we buy there. I was near there, maybe halfway from home, and decided to get out there and get something. Ended up getting a minikeg of Bell's Two Hearted Ale, an American IPA, and a single bottle of Bell's Kalamazoo Stout. Felt that I needed a stout for today. While there, the clerk told me that they had just unpacked the delivery truck and there were six packs of Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout. I asked how much they were. He looked it up, told me it came in four packs, looked at the screen again and said "That can't be right." Went to the back, checked the computer again. More than $30 for four normal bottles of beer. I passed. It's a breakfast stout, which Founder's does incredibly well, but then they age it in bourbon barrels. I've heard it's great, but not on my bar tab this week.

Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout, part of complete breakfast of champions! $30 sounds cheap for beer.. If your at a professional sporting event. While I'm slightly disgusted at the price I'm even more interested in trying it. Aged in bourbon barrels, awesome! It must be some really good beer. It's now on my shopping list.

I've been sampling a beer that I made with folks from church. It was to be a Belgian Pale Ale, but I got a lot more sugar out of the grain and ended up with something a lot stronger. Much more like a Belgian Tripel, which isn't a bad thing at all. I've also been sampling a sour beer I made in December. I blended the batch back together. One got wheat beer yeast only. The other got the wheat beer yeast and another "wild" yeast called Brettonomyces 'lambicus'. It's a yeast that can metabolize wood fibers. It produces some sour flavors but can also go a horse blanket direction, which believe it or not, can be pleasant in a very contained dosage. Well, at this point, it's very pleasant. And I'm carbonating a stout which when I sampled it uncarbonated yesterday blew my mind. I didn't think it would come out this good after all the problems I had brewing it.

Interestingly, a wealthy friend asked me if I wanted to start a brewery and sort of suggested that he has some suitable equipment and facilities. He certainly has the money to help attract more investors, so we'll see. I wouldn't expect to start doing it until 2012, so there's time to think it over and do research.

That'd be awesome ben! I'd buy some. Definitely keep us posted.

I've been drinking Boulevard's Pilsner lately and I just found out that they took gold in the American-Style Specialty Lager Category at the 2010 World Beer Cup. It's nice and crisp, perfect right after mowing the grass.

This was in the growler on the live show this week:

(512) ALT

(512) ALT is a German-style amber ale that is fermented cooler than typical ales and cold conditioned like a lager. ALT means “old” in German and refers to a beer style made using ale yeast after many German brewers had switched to newly discovered lager yeast. This ale has a very smooth, yet pronounced, hop bitterness with a malty backbone and a characteristic German yeast character. Made with 98% Organic 2-row and Munch malts and US noble hops.

Excellent, Troy! Do I have it right that (512) doesn't have their own pub? I'm going to be judging beer tomorrow night in a place in Indianapolis that brews for distribution only. they have a tasting room, but they only sell growlers and kegs at the brewery. They have announced the startup of a canning line so it can be sold in the local market. I'm curious to see this operation. I also like the idea of using as much local ingredients as possible. I wonder if any of the barley comes from Texas. It's usually associated with the Great Plains states and Canada.

Speaking of judging, I'll be judging Strong beers tomorrow night. That's Old Ale, and English and American Barleywines. On Saturday I'm judging Pilsners and Bocks. Should be a good weekend. This is the regional level of the National Homebrew Competition. The top three in each catagory will go to Minneapolis in June to compete with the top three from the rest of the regions. I'm hoping my Morello Stout makes it to the final round, but I don't expect to do well at that level since I haven't been able to brew it exactly the same since December.

But this is a drinking thread.

This afternoon, I enjoyed this fine beer:

We had a sixer of the Ranger in the DL fridge not long ago.

Just got a (splurge!) small shipment in from my favorite off-the-beaten-path Napa Winery, Quixote. I'm a fan of the big Petite Syrahs that they stake their rep on, but my favorite is their second label, Panza. Grenache-Mouvedre, Claret, Cab, and Petite Syrah are delicious to me. Hard to find and cool label design are a bonus. Love that juice.

Prowling Woot!wines these days for Pinot bargains. Drinking more of that varietal these days. Love Wrath, but too pricey for daily table use. I need a good Pinot label for a wine club membership. Ideas?

Next trip to NoCal has to be all about Pinot.

Hey Ben. How long will a keg of beer last in a kegerator? I doubt I would go through one quick enough. I'm thinking it would take me a couple of months at least for me to drink through one of those. Although I've never had a keg of beer that accessible just asking to be drank.

Technically, indefinitely. Since you're filling with CO2 to push out the carbonated beer, there's no spoiling. That's not to say that flavors can't change, but it's usually not in a bad direction. Some beers are better drunk young and others old.

I have beer in the fridge that I made in September. It's fine.

Personally, I've decided to steer away from the larger size containers. I limit temptation by only keeping one or two bottles in the fridge and loading it up on Thursday night to be ready for the weekend.

I've got a capper and just re-wash my old bottles. It's easier to bring a cooler of homebrew to a bbq than it is to move a keg. When I show up with a cooler full of homebrew there's a variety of styles to choose from. With a keg, you're stuck with that flavour until the keg is empty. I suppose you could switch partway through, but When summer is in full swing, I like a pilsner while I mow the lawn, and an english bitter while I BBQ, and a european lager after the kids go to bed.

Jut my (limited) experience. I'm still on my first dozen batches...

I take growlers to parties and use picnic taps for dispensing in addition to the 2 tap tower on the top of the freezer. Bottling is just too much work. I have to do it to send to competitions and give away. Bot, it takes a couple minutes to set up for kegs as opposed to however long washing and sanitizing bottles takes.

If I was buying beer, though, I'd go for a keg. Sometimes you want only half a pint or even a splash. If all you have are bottles, you're stuck.

Here's the brewery in Indianapolis that built their business on growler and keg sales. They started selling cans a few weeks ago, but their model is still wholesale. And it's great beer.

I've been off of beer for a few days. Brewing increases my consumption and then it tapers off until I get ready to do another. I've got a bottle of Ranger in the fridge to finish off and I'm probably taking a minikeg of Bell's Two Hearted Ale with me to a cabin this weekend. I'm judging the Upland UpCup on Saturday which is followed by an AHA rally (American Homebrewers' Association) at the brewery. Should have some great lambics there.

Getting psyched about the summer beer season. I was never a big 'summer beer' drinker. Scottish ales don't really lend themselves to summer variations. But I forgot how much I really enjoy Shipyard Summer Ale until I started seeing it on the shelves again. I'm currently making my way through Red Hook's new summer pilsner, Rope Swing. I didn't like it at first, but it is beginning to grow on me. I was really hoping it would hold up to another local pilsner from Moat Mountain, but no such luck. I think my next purchase, however, will be Anchor's summer offering. I've never seen it in NH before, and I figure I'd better get my hands on some while I can. And one of the new restaurants in town supposedly has Narragansett on TAP. I'll have to give that a try for sure. Ah, the olden days. Cheers.

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
